बैंक की परीक्षा हो या आईएएस (Bank exam or IAS exam) की, इंग्लिश (English) को निम्नलिखित भागों में बांटा जाता है—

  1. Comprehension
  2. Spotting errors
  3. Selecting correct sentences
  4. Sequence of sentences (Parajumbles)
  5. Vocabulary
  6. Fill in the blanks with suitable word, preposition, conjunction, punctuation etc.
  7. Synonyms
  8. Antonyms

(Reading English Comprehension Strategies for lengthy English comprehension)

First Step

A Comprehension passage from a previous year question of CAT:-

Election year or no election year, prices of essential commodities are rising sharply. This is inspite of the year having a second good monsoon in succession. The wholesale price index, which stood at 156.8 on 1 April, 1989, has risen to 167.7 by 16 Sept, 1989; a rise of nearly 7 percent in 6 months. Primary articles and manufactured products rose by 7.7 percent and 7.6 percent respectively.

The rise in prices of sugar; edible oils and tea is alarming, to say the least, the price increase in sugar is so phenomenal that it leaves a bitter taste. Wholesale prices have shot up from Rs. 700 a quintal last year to Rs. 1100 a quintal, at the major trading centres, up by 57 percent. Retail prices have risen even more. Tea prices have gone 40% in the last six months. The story is the same for commodities like pulses, meat and other household items.

In India, the prices of essential commodities rise because of excessive demand pull and that of luxury items because of cost push. Sometimes, government policies misfire, commodities and hoarded and sold in the black market, all of which aggravate the price instability.

The official reason for the sharp rise in the price of sugar is the fall in sugar production from 9.11 million tones in 1988 to 8.7 million tones this year. The delay in imports was prompted by the optimism that sugar production would touch a new high of 10.2 million tonne this year. It was only in June that the government, waking up at last, decided to import 500,000 tonne of sugar. But, by then, the harm was done and prices soared.

In the case of groundnut oil, the problem was not of fall in production but of government bungling. The production of groundnut oil actually increased from 570,000 tonne to 790,000 tonne this year, bringing down the price of the oil to a value much below the target price range of Rs. 20,000-25,000. But when the government started mopping up substantial amounts of groundnut oil, the prices soared.

The steady increase in support prices over the years mostly to placate the “farmer lobby” has had a lot to do with inflation in the country. The same is the case with administered prices of industrial goods like coal, steel, cement, other non-ferrous metals, fertilizers and drugs. These increases have lead a cascading effect on other industrial products.

Interestingly, production shortfalls and procurement prices make only one side of the story.

Second Step

The incredible rise in the price of sugar could be avoided if:–

  1. there was a rise in the production of sugar
  2. the government imported sugar earlier
  3. the people consumed less sugar
  4. there was rationing in sugar distribution

“The incredible rise in the price of sugar could be avoided if”

यदि if के बदले because शब्द रहता तो हम पाते कि इस प्रश्न में  rise in price of sugar का कारण पूछा जा रहा है, उपाय नहीं.

तो इस तरह हमने  इस प्रश्न में keywords पाया:-

Sugar, price, rise, avoid

Second Paragraph में rise in prices of sugar लिखा है मगर ऐसा कुछ नहीं लिखा जिससे पता चले कि how it can be avoided.

Fourth Paragraph में sharp rise in the price of sugar लिखा है. और साथ में reason भी लिखा है.

इसलिए जरुर यहीं-कहीं उत्तर है.

अगले लाइन में the delay in imports was prompted by the optimism that sugar production was prompted by the optimism that sugar production would touch a new high of 10.2 million tonne this year.

चाहे आप इस पूरे टेढ़े वाक्य का मतलब समझे या नहीं, आप अब guess करने लायक हो गए हैं कि आंसर (answers) इन्हीं दो लाइन (lines) में है.

Delay in imports का अर्थ , आयात में देरी.

अब आप्शन (options) B देखिये जहाँ लिखा है, if

b) the government imported sugar earlier

Q. The passage probes deeply into the matter of

a) rise in prices of sugar and edible oil (Hint : याद कीजिये, tea के बारे में भी जिक्र है)

b) surplus production of grains (सिर्फ grains के सरप्लस के बारे में नहीं दिया गया है, बाकी चीजे भी हैं)

c) production shortfalls (पैसेज में production fall के अलावा support prices का भी ज़िक्र है.

d) rise in prices of all essential commodities.

Q. The prices of commodities have become unstable in 1989 because

a) 1989 was an election year (Hint :पैसेज के पहले लाइन से ही पता चलता है कि इलेक्शन इयर चाहे रहे या न रहे , इन्फ्लेशन मौजूद है. इसीलिए यह उत्तर नहीं हो सकता)

b) of the hoarding of commodities and selling in the black market (Hint : तीसरे पैराग्राफ के दूसरे लाइन में commodities are hoarded and sold के बारे में लिखा है. मगर याद रखे आगे के paragraph में price instability के अन्य कारण भी दिए गए हैं)

c) of production shortfalls (Hint : production shortfalls की -फ्रेज…चौथे पैराग्राफ में है और पैसेज के अंतिम लाइन में भी. मगर याद रखे आगे के paragraph में price instability के अन्य कारण भी दिए गए हैं)

d) of bad government policies (Hint : bad government policies की-फ्रेज तीसरे paragraph में है. मगर याद रखे आगे के paragraph में price instability के अन्य कारण भी दिए गए हैं)

e) of excessive demand pull (Hint : demand pull की-फ्रेज तीसरे paragraph में है. मगर price instability के अन्य कारण भी दिए गए हैं)

f) Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Options are right

2. टफ वोकैब्लरी (Tips and strategy of reading English comprehension which is full of Tough Vocabulary)

वोकैब्लरी की समस्या (problem of vocabulary) का समाधान निम्नलिखित प्रकार से संभव है:-

  1. रोज़ नए-नए शब्दों से भिड़ना. आप भिड़ोगे तब ही जब कुछ पढ़ोगे. आपको मैगज़ीन, इंग्लिश-पेपर रोज़ पढ़ने का अभ्यास करना होगा. इसके अलावा कोई उपाय नहीं है. चाहे आप कोई भी अखबार पढो, Hindu, Times of India, Pioneer, Hindustan Times etc.

3. कॉम्पलेक्स्ड सेंटेंस (Tips for understanding the complexed sentences in given English Comprehension)

The wholesale price index, which stood at 156.8 on 1 April, 1989, has risen to 167.7 by 16 Sept, 1989.

इसमें which stood at 156.8 on 1 April, 1989 एक क्लॉज़ (clause) है जो सेंटेंस (sentence) में जुड़ा हुआ है. यदि हम क्लॉज़ को हटा दें तो सेंटेंस में बचेगा—

The wholesale price index has risen to 167.7 by 16 Sept, 1989.

इसी कॉम्प्रिहेंशन से दूसरा उदहारण लीजिये (another example of clause from the same comprehension)….

It was only in June that the government, waking up at last, decided to import 500,000 tonne of sugar.

इसमें waking up at last एक clause है जिसके बिना भी वाक्य (sentence) को समझा जा सकता है.

खैर, यह आर्टिकल यहीं ख़त्म नहीं होता है. यह तब ख़त्म होगा जब आप कुछ सीख कर उसे implement करोगे. आगे भी लिखता रहूँगा यदि आपका सहयोग मिलता रहे तो.

Summary of the article in English

Today we discussed about some tips and tricks to solve English comprehension. Sometimes English comprehension passages are long and take our enough time to solve them in a limited time. We discussed about some strategies to solve English comprehension questions. We face three kinds of problems while reading comprehension: 1st, its lengthiness, tough vocabulary and complexed sentences. To tackle the comprehension’s lengthiness, we adopted formula of selective reading. We highlighted few important sentences of each para. Then we jumped to the 2nd step where we have decided to choose some important words from questions so that we can search those words easily in the given comprehension. Then we discussed how to tackle tough vocabularies. Reading newspapers, magazines is an important practice. We should note down the new word in a notepad or worksheet and then we should take help from dictionary to make our own sentence from that word. In the final paragraph of our article we had a discussion on how to tackle complexed sentences in a given comprehension passage. We did not go in detail. We only talked about clauses that very often create problems for the Hindi medium students.
